Soteriology | Justification: By Grace, Through Faith, Unto Works
This week Pastor Lance continues his deep dive into our doctrinal statement with a lesson on the topic of justification. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God — and the God we have sinned against has sworn He will not clear the guilty, even calling it something He hates to let the wicked go free. So the gospel has a real problem to solve: how can a just God declare a guilty person righteous and still be just? Scripture answers that question at the cross. It leads to one main idea: justification is the reality that a guilty sinner is in righteous standing with God, grounded wholly in grace, received solely through faith, and evidenced necessarily by works.
Pastor Lance works through the lesson in three movements:
- Justification by grace — how it happens (Romans 3:24) — Grace does not justify by ignoring justice. The lesson unpacks redemption (a price paid in blood, not silver or gold), propitiation (God publicly setting Christ forward as the place where judgment falls), imputation (a double transfer — our sin charged to Christ, His righteousness credited to us), and why works are necessarily excluded. Wages are owed; gifts are not.
- Justification by faith — how it is received (Romans 3:28) — Where faith comes from, who produces it, and why faith justifies. Faith is not the ground of our standing; it is the empty hand that receives. As Berkhof observes, Scripture says we are justified through faith but never on account of faith — if it were otherwise, believing would become a work we could take credit for.
- Justification by works — the fruit of grace (James 2:24) — Paul asks how a sinner is declared righteous; James asks how you can tell a person has been justified. Abraham was counted righteous in Genesis 15, decades before he offered Isaac in Genesis 22. Works didn't earn his standing; they proved it.
Along the way, the class works through key definitions — justify, imputation, the double emphasis, how justification differs from sanctification, and why it is never repeated — and considers what goes wrong when grace, faith, and works are misplaced: reverse the order and you get legalism; cut off the last part and you get presumption.
Grace gives. Faith receives. Works display.
