Philippians 1:9-11 | Paul's Joyful Life of Prayer
This week Pastor Lance Nelson brings a message titled "Paul's Joyful Life of Prayer" from Philippians 1:9-11.
Writing from a dark, filthy prison cell with no end in sight, Paul somehow continues to pray — and to pray with joy. How?
The big idea of this message shows us the way: we can continue in the joy of prayer by praying for others — specifically, for their spiritual progress and spiritual blessedness. Pastor Lance walks through three specific prayers we can joyfully pray for others:
1. That love would abound in their lives — not the self-centered, feelings-based love of the world, but Christlike love coupled with knowledge (learned by experience) and discernment, that "delicate tactfulness" that knows how and when to act (v. 9)
2. That purity would mark their lives — as abounding love leads us to approve what is excellent, we begin to see clearly what fuels our joy in Christ and what kills it, and we purge what contradicts it (v. 10)
3. That righteousness would fill their lives — that they would be filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes only through a vital, abiding union with Jesus Christ, all to the glory and praise of God (v. 11) Along the way, Pastor Lance draws from George Herbert's picture of prayer as "reverse thunder," David Brainerd's testimony that his greatest joy came in interceding for others, and the moving reminder from Hebrews that Jesus Himself lives right now to make intercession for us.
The message closes with two simple questions: Who is someone in your life you could begin praying for today? And when was the last time you asked someone to pray for your spiritual growth? If your prayer life feels stagnant or joyless, this message shows you where to start — by bringing others before the throne of grace.
